Character Creation

My work often involves creating human or animal characters, especially for children's material. This gallery contains characters created for educational publications, as well as web sites and packaging .

In one job I had to create four characters for the BBC web site 'Blast'. Each character had to represent art, music, dance and film.

'HeadzUp' was a tricky but enjoyable commission. The web site was set up as a young persons resource for the charity 'Alopecia UK', who provide support for sufferers of the hair loss condition alopecia, to partner the adult site. There was to be a teens section and a younger section, for which I had to come up with child characters drawn in a style that would appeal to a broad age range (5-12). Each character had to depict various different types of the condition and to be shown wearing various types of head gear or none at all. I also had to create an 'agony aunt' type character, which turned out to be a featherless bird (the charity's acronym is AUK, and an Auk happens to be a bird, and since the charity had a story to go on the web site about a bird that had lost it's feathers, so we came up with the character of a featherless bird called 'Auklet' for the agony aunt slot, entitled 'Ask Auklet'). There was a large amount of consumer research done for this project, and I think together with Jellymould design, we came up with a very attractive and informative site.

'My Silver Balloon' involved creating a bear character called 'Poochki' who would appear in the narrated stories that accompany the music on the CDs. You can see the more of this in the links section, gallery 6, and 'printed material'.
